The Original and Genuine by McChrystal's is a classic English snuff.

The snuff base has been produced by Wilsons of Sharrow in Sheffield since 1926, and McChrystal's has been mixing and flavouring it according to a secret recipe in Leicester for over 80 years – even if you occasionally hear that the snuff comes from Switzerland.

The snuff is medium to light brown, quite uniform, finely powdered ground and dry according to a snuff.

Smell in the can:
A complex menthol aroma dominates, but this does not overpower the subtly sweet, somewhat animalistic tobacco scents and a slight hay note. Overall, the snuff seems fresh, generally floral, with slight citrus hints and promises a complex sniffing experience at the first sniff.

Smell in the nose:
The restrained menthol scent from the can is somewhat deceptive – the snuff is strongly provided with menthol! Nevertheless, this is not a menthol howler where the nose has a fair, rather the menthol combines with the tobacco aromas to create an almost fruity-sweet overall impression, in which the animalistic and hay-like nature of the tobacco rounds off excellently to a pleasant and complex overall impression. There could also be a hint of eucalyptus. The tobacco base is very balanced and harmoniously mixed. Freshness, sweetness, and an indefinable fruitiness are retained, especially when the menthol freshness diminishes a bit over time. The joy of this pinch, which is fine in the best sense of the word, is only somewhat clouded by the shortness of the duration. The round and increasingly complex tobacco scent fades away quite quickly, with the menthol remaining in the nose the longest. After a short time, the Original & Genuine is over. But after the pinch is before the pinch.

Starch:
The Original & Genuine is said to be very high in nicotine, which the reviewer cannot understand. Probably some people are once again confusing spice with starch. However, the tobacco base is spicy. The snuff seems to be rather medium.

Result:
A thoroughly substantial, if not massive, medicated snuff, which is rightly considered a classic.

Recommendation:
For lovers of medicated snuffs, this pinch is a must; the Original & Genuine from McChrystal's belongs in every snuff bar anyway. Beginners should enjoy the first pinches carefully, however, as it smells a bit harmless from the can, but has it thick behind the tobacco crumbs.
